Contrary to rumors making the rounds since Tuesday, the Nigerian Police and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, have said suspected Boko Haram insurgents did not take over a section the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Earlier reports had suggested that the terrorists were shooting and maiming their victims on the expressway.

According to NEMA’s South-West Spokesperson, Ibrahim Farinloye, the emergency agency got “a false alert” that 18 suspected Boko Haram members, armed with AK47 rifles, were on the highway “displaying their skills.
“If you are on the Lagos/Ibadan Express road going towards Ibadan, please turn back. Eighteen suspected Boko Haram members with AK47 riffles are on the highway now displaying their skill. Nine policemen and 11 civilians have been confirmed dead by this gunmen. Please rebroadcast to save lives. May God help us in Nigeria,” the message stated.
Sanusi stated that: “On February 16, 2014, the suspected gunmen were spotted on surveillance, spying the mobile base.

“The policemen uncovered the nefarious plan and gallantly engaged them in a gun dwell but they escaped.

“The certificates are in recognition of their alertness, courage and gallantry in confronting the suspects."

The commissioner added that the command would recommend the officers' promotion to the Inspector General of Police.

“We are modelling after the Inspector General of Police’s policy of recognising excellence to encourage efficiency in the police.

“The IGP recognises and appreciates efficiency in service and I am a proud beneficiary of this recognition, and I am extending same to officers and men of the command,” Sanusi said.
